Okay, I admit it. I am a pretty big fan of the colorful and eclectic surf, fashion, and lifestyle photography of Tara Michie and her blog, Ladyslider. This creative, heavily ocean-inspired lady, hailing from the sunny Hawaiian island of O’ahu, has a way of showing the world through her eyes that will make you want to grab a camera and a surfboard (and possibly even a nice fresh coconut) and take care of some of that wanderlust. So you can probably imagine how stoked we are to feature her here and get to know a little bit more of her story.
Will you tell us a bit about yourself?
Just a creative nut from Hawai’i trying to share my perspective on life.
I could spend hours scrolling through Ladyslider and feasting my eyes. How did it all begin?
I needed a creative outlet and wanted to share the most special things in my life, like surfing, travel, and fashion. I know I am not the best surfer, and I can only buy my favorite designer on the sale rack, but I thought I had a unique point of view and wanted to share it.
In one sentence how would you describe Ladyslider?
An eclectic blend of salt water loving, fashion feigning, and continent hopping.
How does your island lifestyle affect who you are and what you do?
Being from an island is apart of my identity. I think everyone that grows up on an island but has a worldly view of themselves can offer a really unique point of view. The islands are what inspire me and sustain so much of what I do. I take photos of coconut trees, surf in the ocean, and enjoy our unique, laid back culture so much. When I go away, it is very apparent to me how easy it is to feel different. People from Hawai’i have a certain je ne sais quoi. But I am definitely not a cool person. It’s the Hawai’i in me that is cool, and people see that.
Can you describe a typical day in your life, if there is such a thing?
No day is the same for me. Sometimes I am stuck in front of my computer for days. Other times I am in a completely different country trying to absorb everything new around me. And other days are spent surfing all day with nothing else to do but waste time.
What do you most enjoy about what you do? Being outside and using my everyday life as a canvas.
My profession can be a double-edged sword. I am constantly working and never really turn off. I think it is like that for anyone who is creative and not really good at anything else but being creative. Haha. But I get to go surfing and/or shoot my friends surfing, and I cannot complain much about that!
Where do you find your inspiration?
Everything and everyone around me. I shoot what I see, and I think that transcends into my work.
A picture is worth a thousand words, or so they say. If you could sum yourself up in one photograph, what would it look like?
A double exposure of the ocean and the people I love most surrounding me. Those are the two most important things in my life and what help keep me grounded.
Are there any exciting adventures or creative endeavors in store for the new year?
Nothing planned yet! But the unexpected adventures are always the best ones!
How can we keep up with all the latest happenings in the world of Ladyslider?
I post pretty regularly on Instagram and when I have time I like to do lengthy posts on my blog. I have a bunch of creative projects I’ve been working on and haven’t had a chance to put them out onto the WWW yet!
