Finding My Inner Picasso

Finding My Inner Picasso

Yesterday I had the amazing opportunity to join Venus Goes Gidget and surfboard artist Fieldey for the inaugural Gidgets Go Picasso surfboard art workshop. I had high expectations, filling several pages of my sketchbook with sketches and scribbles of possible designs, and my expectations were far exceeded.

Fieldey is an Australian urban artist based in Perth who is well-known for her surf art, skateboard art, and graffiti. Some of you might have even seen her YouTube tutorials on her channel, Fieldey TV. Throughout the day, Fieldey demonstrated some basic spray paint techniques and guided us along as we delved deep into our creative sides and spiced up our own surfboards.

From just a few techniques demonstrated on Claudia’s now very colourful surfboard, each girl created something unique and personal. It was incredible how even those who didn’t consider themselves to be artistically inclined whipped up some pretty sweet designs. None of us will have to worry about losing our boards now, and we’ll all be pretty recognisable in the line-up!

The art part of the workshop was amazing, but I also loved the feeling of community among all the surfer girls. Some of the girls already knew each other and had surfed together, and some of us were new additions to the group, but we all share a common passion for surfing. I’ve met other girls who surf, but I have never been part of a community of female surfers. This was different to anything I have experienced, and it was exciting. I can’t wait to be back in Bondi later in the year and become a part of it all.

Thank you to Claudia and Fieldey for showing me how to give my surfboard a makeover and inspiring the female surfing community. I’m so stoked to see what’s in store for the future!
